What is cosmetic acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture is an extension of traditional acupuncture and is a centuries old practice.

It is a gentle, effective and safe way to combat the signs of ageing and can erase years from your face without the risks of surgery and the downtime needed to recover.

If you want to improve the look and feel of your skin, cosmetic acupuncture or facial rejuvenation acupuncture as it is also called, offers many benefits: it builds collagen, tones muscles, improves circulation and stimulates blood flow with no risk of scars, infections, rashes or toxic build-up of chemicals.

Facial acupuncture not only addresses the signs of ageing but also the skin’s overall health.

A course of cosmetic acupuncture treatments can:

  • Erase fine lines and diminish deeper wrinkles
  • Improve muscle tone and increase collagen production
  • Eliminate puffiness by improving metabolism and eliminating excess fluids
  • Improve hormonal balance which can benefit acne
  • Increase circulation of blood and lymph to the face and improve facial colour
  • Moisturise the skin and tighten pores
  • Reduce stress evident in the face
  • Slow the ageing process from within
  • Promote overall health and well-being

As you age the muscles in your face gradually lose their tone and mass, this causes sagging, deep wrinkling and dull skin associated with ageing.

Facial acupuncture stimulates the muscle function and the face lifts itself via the acupuncture points. Needles are also placed in wrinkles creating a micro- trauma which causes collagen to be produced. These techniques return the face to a healthier more revitalized and youthful appearance.

The needles used in facial acupuncture are extremely fine and are no more than a hair’s width.

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is much more than just a cosmetic procedure. As with all Chinese traditional medicine, it is based on the principle that health is manifested from the inside out, using a holistic approach.

Because acupuncture changes the energy flow within the body, it can initiate the process for repair and constitutional rejuvenation. If energy is not flowing smoothly throughout the body, your organs, muscles and lymphatic system cannot function as efficiently, which can lead to puffiness, bags and premature ageing.

These same techniques can also be an effective treatment for neurological conditions such as Bell’s palsy.

At your first appointment, I would want to assess your diet, lifestyle, and general health, as all these factors will contribute to the health of your skin.

I may decide to treat the digestive system or choose acupuncture points to help the detoxification process of the body via the kidney or liver meridians and so would use a combination of acupuncture points on the face and the body.

This would ensure a longer lasting outcome for the treatment as well as overall better health and you may find that as well as your skin improving and your fine lines disappearing that your sleep improves, you have more energy and better digestion.

A course of six to eight treatments is recommended for the treatment to have longer, lasting effects, although most people will notice a difference after one to two treatments. Following the initial course of treatment, having regular maintenance treatments will help to prolong the results. If you have any questions about cosmetic acupuncture, I would be delighted to hear from you.
